1. TOFEL (Test of English as a foreign language)

Test of English as a Foreign Language is conducted to measure the skills of English Language in an academic setting. It is one of the basic requirements to enroll students in to higher learning institutes and universities, many government agencies, businesses, scholarship programs and licensing agencies.

Ethiopian students are required to take TOFEL test as they are non-native English speakers. The TOFEL test includes Writing, Reading, Structure and Listening sections. And there are two types of TOFEL test;

TOFEL PBT (Paper based)

  • The test is taken on Paper.
  • Includes Writing, Reading, Structure and Listening sections.
  • Scores are measured out of 600 Points.
  • Cost – 180 USD or 4,200 ETB
  • Listening section of the test is played once and testers are not allowed to take notes.
  • Offered only in locations where testing via the internet is not available.

TOFEL IBT (Internet based)

  • The test is taken by using a computer.
  • Includes integrated skills in addition to Writing, Reading, Structure and Listening sections.
  • Scores are measured out of 120 Points.
  • Cost – 180 USD or 4,200 ETB
  • Testers will be provided individual head sets and you can take notes.

Tip: You can take the test for Free, if you are not able to afford the payment. In order to be eligible for Fee waiver you will need to provide a letter from your school that can confirm you are not able to afford the Payment required.

If you registered for fee waiver, you’re automatically eligible to receive four college application fee waivers.

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

International English Testing System is an English Language Test, which is managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, British Council and IDP Education Pty Ltd.

The main objective is to test the candidate’s ability to listen, speak, read and write in English language.  IELTS is conducted in two versions, the Academic Version and General Training Version.

IELTS Academic Version 

For students who want to enroll in higher institutions and professional studies such as universities or other higher educational institutes and colleges.

Cost – 4,730 ETB for IELTS Academic

IELTS General Training Version

For candidates who want to pursue academic training, to gain work experience or for other immigration requirements.

Cost – 5,680 ETB for IELTS UK visa and immigration

Cost – 4,260 ETB for IELTS Life Skills

The process of scoring in IELTS is different from other Standardized Tests because there are no minimum marks or points required to pass it. Each test taker is scored between 1 and 9, where 1 is non user and 9 is expert user. 0 is also given to students who do not appear for the test.

  • Listening Section – Duration of 40 minutes
  • Reading Section –  Duration of 60 minutes
  • Writing Section –   Duration of 60 minutes

SAT(Scholastic Aptitude Test)

The SAT and SAT subject (SSAT) Tests are designed to assess your academic readiness for the college. SAT is  a per-requisite for admission to many colleges worldwide. SAT tests your strength in critical reading, writing and math.

  • Each skills are measured out of 800 points which totals to 2,400.
  • You will have 3 hours, 45 minutes to take the test.
  • There are 10 sections, but only 9 of the sections count towards your score.
  • The SAT has a stronger emphasis on vocabulary.
  • SAT score is valid for 5 years. And in some colleges up to 10 years.
  • Cost – 85 USD or 1,984 ETB

The payment covers the cost to send your score to four colleges. You have to use this chance in exactly nine consecutive days after your test date.  

Each Scholarship providing University has their own minimum SAT score requirement, which you can check in the admissions requirement section of their website. Ivy league Universities like Harvard, Yale, Stanford require a score of above 2,000.

Tip: You can take the test for Free, if you are not able to afford the payment. In order to be eligible for Fee waiver you will need to provide a letter from your school that can confirm you are not able to afford the Payment required.

GRE(Graduate Record examination)

Graduate Record examination (GRE), is a test conducted by the ETS (Educational Testing Services), United States of America to analyze the potential of the candidate  applying for studying abroad.

  • The test is taken when applying for graduate studies in USA.
  • Paper-based format can be taken up to three times a year in October, November and February.
  • The computer-based can be taken at any time of the year.
  • A Bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement to take the test.
